Wind River Range camping and hiking Trip

Wind River Range

camping and hiking Trip

Wyoming's 80-mile-long Wind River Range forms part of the Continental Divide. This remote Wilderness Area contains seven of the ten largest remaining glaciers in the continental U.S. and encompasses more than 10,000 lakes. The highest peak in the range is Gannet Peak at 13,804 feet. (Learn more about the area at this link:  https://www.visitpinedale.org/explore/mountain-ranges/wind-river-mountain-range)

The Winds are big granite mountains with lots of glacier and snowmelt lakes. I can’t imagine there is a bad hike on the list here Sinks Canyon Trails.

If you don’t think you can backpack your gear (approx. 30-35 lbs) into the base camp 6 miles at 9,100 ft elevation with an elevation gain of 600 ft, this trip is probably not for you.

Once we set up the base camp near Big Sandy Lake, your backpack shouldn’t exceed 10 pounds for our daily hikes since water is available via streams and lakes.  Hiking speed will be 2-3 miles/hour, and these trails are challenging especially with the altitude of 9,700-12,590 feet.

BEGIN July 26 (3 days/2 nights)

Sun: Arrive at Sinks Canyon State Park Popo Agie Campground Winds backpacking 2020 (https://www.sinkscanyonstatepark.org/visitor/camping/popo-agie.html) campground to start acclimation at 7,000 ft. We’ll also camp a bit higher, driving up to Worthen Meadows Campground at 9,000 ft. We’ll practice hiking at elevation through Tuesday. Neither campground has power or showers – also only vault toilets.

BASE CAMP 4 days/3 nights

Wed: Drive to Big Sandy Trailhead to backpack 6 miles to the Big Sandy Lake as a base camp. Will make a quick stop for supplies or a hot shower in Lander along the way if needed.

Thu: Hike to Cirque de Towers over Jackass Pass and down into the Cirque (10 miles rt/2000 ft elevation gain)

Fri: Hike to Temple Peak along lakes then up, go as far as you want or all the way to the peak with the best views around (9 miles rt/ 3000 ft elevation gain)

Sat: Hike back to cars

FINISH Sun, Aug 2: Fly back to Houston!

TRAVEL: Plan on coordinating with those flying – arrive in the morning by Sun, July 26th.  It’s probably cheaper to fly into Salt Lake than Jackson, but you might look at the smaller cities like Riverton, Rock Springs or Casper.  Y’all probably want to have your flights booked by May, so please reach out to each other to coordinate as y’all will need a rental car.

If you have not explored Salt Lake City and have extra time, we highly recommend coming a day or two earlier to check it out this beautiful city! Float trips through the Wind River Canyon (about an hour from Lander) or rock climbing trips near Lander are also possible.

GEAR:  We’ll provide a recommended gear/food list closer to the event date.  We will share camping stoves, fuel and bear canistersGear needed will include, but not limited to:

  • Tent, sleeping pad/bag at least 30F warmth
  • Your food, eating utensil, small pot for heating water/food, water/coffee cup
  • Ziplock bags for storage of your items, including trash
  • Light toiletries, 2 sets of hiking clothes, 1 set of camp clothes, bug net or bug spray.
  • Hiking boots or trail hiking shoes, poles, backpack, camp shoes, water filter

Cost:

  • Flight
  • Car rental/gas for those not driving (split)
  • Stove canisters and bear spray (split)
  • Backpacking food
  • Campsite fees (split)
  • Accommodations pre & post hiking (split)

Training Hikes:

  • Cardio training is great for being able to hike at a higher elevation.
  • Wearing a full pack and hiking hills in the Houston area is also a good idea.
  • Look for training hikes posted on the BCO calendar.

We’ll have three planning meetings: April 18 for everyone to meet and discuss any travel coordination, gear list, etc.; and a final planning meeting in late June.  Anyone who registers after the first planning meeting is responsible for their own arrangements to meet up with the group.
