Choose Your Own West Texas Adventure!

Trails and Tranquility...

High in the mountains of West Texas you will find a beautiful and historic park. Explore Davis Mountains State Park’s miles of trails, stay up late to marvel at the night sky, learn about the history of the park and nearby frontier fort. It’s worth the drive! From https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/davis-mountains

We will have four full days to hike, bike, stargaze, visit artistic and historic areas, and the famous Marfa lights!  Whether you desire physical activity, serene stillness in a vast, ancient environment, basking in artistic creation, or learning about history, vegetation and wildlife, this area provides all that and more.

There are numerous hiking trails within the Davis Mountains State Park and the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center, both with historic/educational areas and incredible hiking views.  The McDonald Observatory, a UT research facility, offers educational tours and “Star” parties under the darkest night skies in the country.  There are biking trails in the state park, but also wide-open roads from Fort Davis to Marfa and Alpine – both only 25 miles away. Or a 75-mile scenic, highway loop with steep ascents/descents for the first half, and flat, tranquility on the latter – not for the faint of heart.  Nearby Marfa is home to an internationally renowned art scene, the mysterious Marfa lights, and the fabulous permanent art installation, Prada Marfa.  I’ve also had THE BEST pizza at a pizza shop outside of Marfa!  Also, nearby Alpine is the “city” of the area and has the Museum of the Big Bend that has marvelous exhibits and educational information about Big Bend.  It also has the Sunset Limited Train Depot in case you want to add an overnight train adventure to your itinerary!
