Memorial Park Training Hike on the Southside trails

A 6-8 mile hike on various trails on the Southside.

Hey BCO hikers! I’m looking for new and old training buddies for the summer. Although I'm not training for anything specific at this time, I would like to be in better shape when the temperature in other parts of the country starts to drop in Sept/Oct. If you are thinking about doing a trip this fall or winter, then join me. You are welcome to wear your daypack or backpack. Bring your new gear to break it in. You are also welcomed to ask questions. We often have a few experienced hikers/backpackers join us.

This is a hike, not a leisurely walk but also not a run. These are fun hikes but not the same as walking the flat gravel trail on the Northside of Memorial Drive. These are dirt hiking trails with ups/downs, uneven ground with the occasional tree/branch to climb over/under/around. Some of the trails include crossing small drainage areas that often have water that is potentially ankle deep and muddy on the banks.

We will hike for about 2 hours. The distance will vary depending on the route but plan for 6-8 miles. We’ll hike a variety of trails around the park.

Be sure to bring plenty of water such as 1 liter (34 ounces). Most of the trails are shaded but not all.

Optional items based on your preferences:

  • Additional water

  • Electrolyte drink

  • Hat

  • Snacks

  • Sunscreen

  • Bug spray

  • Sunglasses

I’m often asked, “what should I wear?” My answer is shorts, long pants, leggings, tank tops, short sleeves are all fine. Be mindful that its hot & humid so wear lightweight materials. Hiking boots are not necessary. Running shoes will be fine if you are used to walking long distances in them. Reminder: sometimes we encounter water and mud. That just part of the fun of hiking.

I will cancel the event if it is raining and may cancel if it has rained much recently. Check the event listing on the BCO calendar the morning of the hike. Using the trails when wet causes damage to the trail surface. The clay dirt becomes very slippery and is not much fun anyway.
