Palo Duro Canyon Camping Trip

Hiking, cycling, and stargazing in The Grand Canyon of Texas!

Join BCO for this trip to Palo Duro Canyon located in the panhandle of Texas. We will camp at the state park and hike the Lighthouse and Triasic trails in the canyon.  Palo Duro Canyon has been called "The Grand Canyon of Texas," both for its size and for the dramatic geological features, including the multicolored layers of rock and steep mesa walls similar to thosein the Grand Canyon.  They also have fantastic biking trails and dark, night skies for spectacular star gazing!

This is not hiking for beginners!  There are several fairly difficult trails, but these are mostly moderate trails.  You will need to hike with a minimum of 2.5 liters of water -- more for longer hikes.

Plan to arrive by 2pm Friday so there is time to set up and have an evening hike.  Then we have 3 full days for exploring!  For those who can stay a bit longer we’ll have a morning hike on Tuesday before heading home. Temperatures should be in the low 80’s during the day, and mid 60’s at night.

CACTUS CAMP TENT SITES:  You are responsible for reserving your own site - there were 5 left as of this post (6/18).  Cactus Camp is for tents only: lots of space in between sites, a tent pad large enough for two tents, a covered picnic table, fire ring with grill, and potable water.  It is $16/night per site, 2 cars max. There are also cabins available in another section of the park ($110-$125/night), but they book up very quickly.  I have reserved my tent site (#70) and am willing to share.

If you reserve a site/cabin and are willing to share it, please write that in the notes of your reservation.

If you want to carpool, please write that in the notes of your reservation.

We will have a pre-trip meeting August 31 (please register on BCO calendar) to discuss camping/hiking gear, the trails, meals and travel.  Estimated cost per person:

* Camp site $16/night (can be split for two tents)

* Food $30 (4 BR/ 3LU/ 4 DIN)

* Park entrance fee $8/day - FREE for state park pass holders

* Transportation around park $5

**If carpooling you will split gas expenses.  Drinks & alcohol not included.**
